When it comes to breastfeeding and navigating those raw, early days of motherhood, there is so much information out there. Articles. Podcasts. Social media advice. Expert opinions. Everyone seems to have a say in what you "should" do, and it can be overwhelming.
In fact, did you know that “breastfeeding” is the number one most Googled search term among new moms totaling ~90,500 searches per month? According to recent data, new moms search for breastfeeding-related topics more than anything else—looking for help with latch, milk supply, pumping, and everything in between. That alone shows just how many of us are seeking answers, comfort, and confidence in this part of motherhood.
But here’s something I want you to hold onto: the best advice you can listen to is your own gut.
Because while everyone loves to share what's "right," every mom's journey is different. What worked for your sister, best friend, or even a lactation consultant might not work for you. And if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
I remember being in the hospital, crying because of the pain. My breasts were engorged, and I couldn’t even feed my baby. The lactation consultant told me not to pump because it would "ruin my milk supply." But I was in agony. I called my sister and she said one word: “PUMP.” And so I did. I was instantly relieved, and I could finally breathe again.
I also had a friend whose consultant told her to pump every two hours when her milk was coming in. She followed that advice, and her supply skyrocketed.
This is your reminder: expert advice is just that—advice. Not law. Not gospel. And not the only way. Experts are amazing resources and hold incredible knowledge, but it may not always work for you, and that's okay.
If you’re in pain, something is wrong. If a method makes you miserable, it’s okay to stop. If your intuition is telling you to do something different, follow it. You are not failing by going off-script. You are learning. You are mothering. You are listening to the person who knows your baby best: you.
