Motherhood. It's bathed in a warm glow in baby magazines and celebrated by celebrities with seemingly endless energy. But what about the unfiltered trenches of those early days (and weeks, and months) of new parenthood? Here's a dose of real talk to prepare you for the beautiful, messy, and utterly transformative experience that awaits:
*Sleep-Deprived Everything, Not Just Nights*
Newborns are tiny tyrants with demanding appetites. Forget the eight-hour sleep fantasy – those become a distant memory replaced by a blur of feeding sessions (and diaper explosions) around the clock. Prepare for marathon nursing marathons, late-night coos, and the constant undercurrent of exhaustion.
How to Survive:
- Sleep When Baby Sleeps! Sometimes easier said than done, but do your best to try to get a nap in when baby is sleeping, even if it’s only a cat-nap.
-Tag Team With Your Partner. You take a shift, they take a shift. Teamwork makes the dreamwork, especially with a new baby.
-Optimize Your Sleep Environment. If there is one thing a new baby has taught us, a dark room and a bit of white noise can go a long way!
-Ask For Help. Don’t feel bad about asking for help! And if someone offers? Take them up on it, even it's just for an hour.
*Your Body: It Will Hurt!*
Childbirth is a miracle, but it can also be unpredictable and leave you feeling…different. Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Your body will ache, hormones will fluctuate wildly, and you might leak in unexpected places. Embrace the changes – your body just created a human! Be kind to yourself, mama, we promise, in two weeks, you won’t even remember the pain you just endured
How to Survive:
- Load Up On Those Hospital Goodies! You will be grateful you snagged a few extra ice packs and disposable undies once you get home
- Research The Best Recovery Products and Stock Up Beforehand. Did someone say Le Lolo colored nipple shields?! You know we’ve always got your back! Also, cooling pads will be needed, and ever heard of anti-bacterial spray?! It will do wonders for your sore va-jay-jay!
- Listen To Your Body. Your body just performed a miracle, and it needs to time to recover. Listen to your body's cues for sleep, hydration, and healthy meals. Don't pressure yourself to bounce back instantly – focus on gentle movement and self-care.
*The "Baby Whisperer" is a Myth.*
Babies cry. A lot. And sometimes there's no rhyme or reason. You'll spend countless hours deciphering their needs – is it hunger, gas, a dirty diaper, or just a need for your calming presence? Embrace the detective work – it's part of the beautiful dance of learning to communicate with your little one.
How to Survive
- The Power of Touch: Skin-to-skin contact is incredibly calming for newborns. Hold your baby close, cuddle them on your chest, or try babywearing.
- Shhh! The Magic of White Noise: The rhythmic sounds of a fan, white noise machine, or even a recording of ocean waves can be very soothing for babies.
- The Movement Lullaby: Gently rocking, swaying, or bouncing your baby can mimic the comforting feeling of being in the womb. Take a walk or drive – the rhythmic motion can work wonders.
- Sucking Soother: Sucking is a natural reflex for newborns. A pacifier (if you choose to use one) can be calming, especially between feedings.
- Stay Calm...as much as you can. So much easier said than done, but in moments of distress, baby can feel your responses. Try to breathe through these moments and remember that it will not last forever.
*Showers Become a Luxury*
Those social media moms with perfect hair and makeup? They're likely sending major props to their support system. Finding the time and energy for a simple shower can feel like a victory. Embrace the spit-up stains and messy buns – right now, your focus is on your precious babe.
How to Survive
- Use your support system for a little self-care. You will thank yourself for not trying to do it all on your own and for prioritizing you!
- Baby Swing is like an extra set of hands. Take a swing in the bathroom with you while you get in a quick shower in.
*The Emotional Rollercoaster is Real*
One minute you're drowning in love, gazing at your sleeping angel, the next you're questioning your every decision with a wave of self-doubt. Postpartum hormones are powerful, and emotional swings are par for the course. Don't be afraid to cry, laugh, and feel everything in between. If you're feeling overwhelmed, reach out for help – talking to a trusted friend, therapist, or joining a support group can make a world of difference.
How to Survive:
- Talk It Out: Don't bottle up your feelings! Talk to your partner, a trusted friend, family member, or therapist. Sharing your experiences and anxieties can be incredibly cathartic.
- Embrace the Support System: Lean on your village! Don't be afraid to ask for help with chores, errands, or even just holding the baby while you take a moment for yourself. A strong support system makes a world of difference.
- Practice Self-Care: You can't pour from an empty cup. Prioritize activities that nourish your mind and body, even if it's just a few stolen moments for meditation, a warm shower, or reading a few pages of your favorite book.
- Celebrate the Small Victories: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small. From surviving a diaper blowout to finally getting a decent night's sleep, celebrate your wins!
- Seek Professional Help: If feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm persist or worsen, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Postpartum depression is a real condition, and there is no shame in seeking treatment.
*Comparison is the Thief of Joy*
Social media feeds are a highlight reel, not reality. Every baby develops at their own pace. There's no need to compare your journey to the seemingly perfect pictures online. Focus on the tiny miracles unfolding in your own world – the first smile, the coo of recognition, the precious moments of connection.
How to Survive:
- Set Boundaries: Schedule specific times for checking social media and stick to them. Utilize tools like app timers or website blockers to prevent mindless scrolling.
- Curate Your Feed: Unfollow negativity triggers and accounts that make you feel bad. Instead, follow positive, uplifting content that inspires and motivates you.
- Delete The App. Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to take a break and delete the app. It will be there when you’re ready to come back.
